Presidential Physical Fitness Award

Are you fitter than an eighth-grader?

Since so many of you are back in the gym, I will reward each of you with a Presidential Physical Fitness patch. (Not really.)

If you recognize this patch, you either earned one or wanted one. Today 14-year-old students must score at or above the 85th percentile of these activities:

56 sit-ups in one minute
40 push-ups
10 pull-ups
9.1 shuttle run (timed)
6:26 mile or better

If the only thing you pull-up nowadays are your pants, I suggest that you avoid doing anything on this list for several weeks.

I still have my Presidential patch, but I’d gladly trade it for a batch … of cookies.

Believe it or not, there IS a Participant Physical Fitness Award, which – during my days — did not exist. C’mon, America! We’re better than that!

It’s day 3 of the new year, and I suspect that some of you may be off to a patchy start. That’s okay, as you know, it’s not how you start but how you finish.

Carry on.
